Red – Recovered – 04-27-2018

April 28, 2018 By tracey

Red had quite the adventure since he went missing on 04/15/18 from the Rest Stop on 81 North between Dorrance and Nuangola. His family was headed back from vacation to their home in Connecticut when Red slipped his harness. Red crossed 4 lanes of traffic and ended up on the South Bound side of 81. He never seemed to stay in one spot and kept traveling further out and making his circle bigger and wider.

But, tonight we caught the break we needed because of a wonderful alert couple that saw Red’s flyer in Weis Supermarket today. The sighter (sorry I didn’t get her name but will tomorrow) called me and said Red was just in her yard on St. Mary’s Road. I was already in the area and got there within minutes of the sighting. I snuck up in the yard undetected and setup a food station and camera and quickly left knowing Red was likely very close by the area. Less than 40 minutes later, he came and found the food station. Then he decided to make himself at home in the family’s yard and lay down. He trotted off a little later and we got everything ready to trap him.

We pulled down the long driveway and the homeowner was on her way out and said she believes Red crawled under her side porch that was open on the bottom. She was indeed correct. Our plans quickly changed in minutes from trapping to surrounding the porch. Quick 1 minute plan, everyone was on board and off we went.

Jeff went around the house to cover the backside. Sarah and I quickly but quietly approached from the sides. I blocked the back side until Jeff was in place and went to help Sarah in the front. Red was really scared, but Sarah did an awesome job at getting low to the ground and sweetly talking to her boy. So low that she had to army crawl a few feet under the porch to leash him. Red was so happy to see his mom he was crying. He was scared to come out, but with a little coaxing and help from the homeowner’s dog it all worked out. The homeowner didn’t realize that Red was so scared and accidentally let her out before we had Red comfortable walking even though he was securely leashed. But, we used that too our advantage and I started feeding the homeowner’s dog and Red was like I want some of that yummy food and came right over to me. After yummy food for both pups, we loaded Red in the car and went to surprise his dad that was waiting. He was waiting for us to come back from setting the trap. But, instead we came back with Red!!!!

From the time the call came in until we had Red it was a little less than 2 hours. Everything fell into place perfectly and by adjusting our plan it worked out wonderfully. I have so many people to thank forgive me if I forget anyone.

Thank you to Dave, Francine and Michael, Barbara, Michelle and her hubby, Dr. Stair (world’s best vet 🙂), Raelynn, the sighter, the wonderful owner of P&D Pet Supply and every person that shared the post, hung a flyer and watched for Red. You are all wonderful and helped so very much. Thank you to my hubby, my rock for always being by my side and for being my rescue partner and best friend. Most of all thank you to Sarah and Jack, Red’s owner, for trusting me with getting their baby back home. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer or more dedicated family to work with on a lost dog.

All of my love to everyone that helped get Red back home. Welcome home sweet boy, you stole a piece of my heart. You are so much cuter in person, your photos don’t do you justice. It’s over buddy, it’s finally over. Your safe and now you and your family can rest. Love you Red from Aunt Tracey and Uncle Jeff.

Bonnie – Recovered – 12-10-2016

December 11, 2016 By tracey

We trapped Bonnie today missing since October 17 from North Syracuse, New York after escaping from her owner’s home with her brother Clyde. Clyde didn’t get far at all and the owner was able to get him back in the house, but Bonnie took off.

Bonnie’s rescue, Second Chance, contacted me on December 1 and we did a phone consultation on December 2. Sarah from the rescue got right to work and on December 4, a sighting finally came. There were no sightings in weeks of Bonnie. When Bonnie first went missing they had sightings and had a trap out for her. But, she didn’t want to have anything to do with the trap and kept flipping it over to get the food out. Then she left that spot and sightings were then few and far between until they completely stopped weeks ago.

After Sarah contacted me, food stations were put out, cameras setup, areas searched and businesses were notified as this is a high industrial area. Within 48 hours we knew where she was and then the process began to get her to safety.

Sarah did great at following my, sometimes crazy, instructions and got Bonnie to eat at the food stations consistently. I drove up today and set the trap with the help of Sarah, her hubby Donovan, her dad Joe and Kim and her hubby Mike from the rescue.

Just over an hour later she showed up at the trap and within 5 minutes of showing up at the trap, she went in and the door shut behind her. I ran to the trap, calmed her down and called Sarah to let her know the wonderful news.

We got her out of the trap, loaded into the car and took her to the emergency vet nearby. All her bloodwork was great except for one slightly high level that may indicate she has a parasite. Not unusual at all because of what lost dogs eat while they are lost. She was given a dewormer and will be all better in no time at all.

Bonnie is a sweet girl that had a crappy life before coming into the rescue. She deserves her happily ever after and I’m sure she will find the perfect home. Love, patience, understanding, positive reinforcement and lost prevention go along way to help a scared dog. She will thrive in the right home and will be an outstanding, loyal family member.

I want to thank Sarah for contacting me about Bonnie and for not giving up on her. You rocked everything I asked you to do, thank you. 🙂 Thank you to Donovan and Joe for helping move the trap today. Thank you to the Kim and Mike and her hubby for helping with the trap today and for making sure she seen a vet immediately after we got her to safety.

Thank you to Syracuse Haulers for allowing us full access to your property and for coming out and unlocking the gate once she was in the trap, so I could drive the truck up to load the trap and get her safely loaded into the car. Thank you to my friends Stacie and Brad for letting me borrow your truck today. It was a very long drive today in the snow, 5.5 hours round trip….but, totally worth it to see Bonnie safe.

Thank you to my wonderful hubby that had to work today then watch our pack and our foster dog. Missed my partner in crime today, especially with criminal siblings named Bonnie and Clyde. 🙂

Love you Bonnie, you are safe now no more running, being scared in the woods and fighting to survive the brutal Syracuse snow and weather. Love you girl. We usually don’t travel out of state because of the time and cost, but this girl needed help and I couldn’t leave her out there.

Boomer – Recovered – 11-05-2016

November 7, 2016 By tracey

boomer01b

Boomer went missing on 11/02/16 from Springbrook Township after his leash pulled out of his mom’s hand. There were only 2 sightings both right after he ran when he crossed 307. Then nothing, no sightings. It is always a concern when dogs run with a retractable leash attached, but in my experience every single one of them chew it off and Boomer did just that. Good boy Boomer. 🙂
I went up this morning to flyer with the owners, tell people and do a controlled search of the area. Both owners, Jill and Rick, myself and my hubby did the search. I had the owners take the right, I went through the middle and Jeff took the left. After several trails, I found myself deep in the woods and going with my instincts of where Boomer maybe. I walked up on Boomer standing in the woods, our eyes met and I knew I was made…lol. So, down on the ground I went. I was on the phone with Jeff when I spotted him, but had no idea where Jeff was in relation to where I was at that time. I called the owners and described the best I could where I was and asked them to find me.

I kept Boomer calm and occupied, at one point he felt comfortable enough to curl up for a nap less than 10 feet from me. Poor boy was shaking so bad when he saw me. No worries buddy, I’m here to help. The plan was to get the owners to me because I was hoping Boomer would come to them. He was really scared and gave me a few growls and barks. I calmed him down and kept getting closer to him. His mom and dad were having a really difficult time finding me in the woods and we were losing daylight and hunters were shooting multiple gunshots not far from us. Plan B, I inched closer and closer and he finally sniffed me and I was able to pet him on the head. I then gently grabbed his collar, he didn’t even know I had it. Then I slipped the slip lead over him told him what a great boy he was and we began our journey out of the deep woods.

We met up with Jeff that wasn’t too far away. He tried to find us once I spotted Boomer, but Boomer and I heard him coming on the lower trail with all the leaves, so I asked him to stop moving and stay still until I had the dog secured. Boomer greeted Jeff and off we went to find the owners that didn’t know I had Boomer secured yet. We heard the owners coming on one of the trails and needless to say Boomer, Jill and Rick were all thrilled to see each other. After some hugs, kisses and tears (and food and water for Boomer) we then continued our journey out of the woods and to the car. Loaded him up and took him back home where he belongs. Boomer was incredibly happy to be back home. 🙂

Thank you to the owners for listening and trusting me to help get their baby back. Thank you to the person that referred us from Griffin Pond. Thank you to my hubby for always having my back and being by my side. Best search partner ever. 🙂 Thank you to everyone that shared his photo. The reason there were no sightings is because he was so far back in the deep woods.
Love you Boomer….my Boom Boom. Welcome home sweet boy. You are safe now buddy.

And NO more retractable leashes for this boy, we left it in the woods where it belongs (it was laying right next to him when I found him)….

Here is a video of how happy Boomer was to be home:

Keep Your Pets Safe This Halloween

October 14, 2015 By tracey

This Halloween lets keep our pets safe. Halloween is a time when our pets have a greater chance to escape from us. The top Halloween hazards for pets are escaping and being poisoned. Both animal shelters and veterinarians see a spike in their business during the Halloween season.

Make Sure to follow us on Facebook.

Below we have a few pet safety tips to keep our furry family members home this Halloween.

Tips for keeping them safe at home:

  • Before the trick-or-treating starts, put your pets in a quiet room where they will be safe from all the Halloween activity. The constant opening of the door for trick -or-treating gives them opportunity to escape while you are distracted.
  • Even if you are just having friends over for a Halloween party, keep your pets away from the festivities in their safe room. Masks and costumes change how people look and smell to a pet, so even familiar people may become frightening.
  •  When going out trick-or-treating, leave your dog at home. Dogs can be easily excited by the Halloween commotion, and a bite or a lost dog will quickly end the evening’s fun.
  • After you’ve let your pets out of their safe room, place treats safely in a high cabinet secured with a lock or child-safety latch. Many foods, such as chocolate, gum and xylitol (a sweetener used in many foods) are hazardous to them.
  •  Keep treats away from your children unless you are observing them. Children may make the harmful mistake of sharing with their four-legged friends.

If you want to take your pet out trick-or-treating:

  • Make sure they are micro-chipped, the chip is registered and your information is up-to-date.
  • Make sure they have a good collar on with their tags(license, rabies, etc.)
  • You can get them a GPS collar to wear just in case they get away.
  • Make sure they are wearing something bright and reflective so at night people can see them.
  • NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES!! With all of the kids and parents running around you won’t have the control you need to keep the close by and safe. Also retractable leashes break very easily or slip out of your hands.

What do I do if my pet gets out during Halloween?

  • First thing is DO NOT YELL THEIR NAME!! When you yell their name they can sense the tension in your voice and they will think they are in trouble, so they will most likely run away.
  • DO NOT CHASE after them. Running after your dog will certainly cause them to run away from you. Best thing to do is grab a smelly treat and get down on the ground, do not make direct eye contact, wait for them to come to you and if you try to speak to them talk softly and in a high voice. You have to remember that a lost pet does not take the time to see who is coming towards them they just think predator and run away.
  • If your dog leaves your immediate area, inform your neighbors to be on the lookout and to let you know if they see your dog, but advise them of the tips above. Most people generally want to help, but they tend to do all the wrong things first.
  • Refrain from sending out search parties because if an animal sees a bunch of people coming at them it is very intimidating and they may flee farther away.
  • If you live near woods and you know a bunch people with quads or side-by-sides that say, “we will go searching for you.” BAD IDEA!! The noise they put off is loud and scary to a dog.
  • If your cat gets out, most cats do not travel far so check under porches, decks, cars, bushes, anything they can hide under. Also ask your neighbors to check their yards as well.
  • Visit our Facebook Page and PM us the details of your lost pet.

Tips for posting lost pet information on Facebook:

Facebook can get the word out about your lost pet very quickly, but it is important that you have the right people helping you. Untrained help can hurt the situation. When posting please add all the above tips such as DO NOT CHASE, DO NOT YELL their name. Instead ask people to please Private Message you as the owner with sighing information. Never post sighting information, because some people will go out trying to help and not listen to our tips and make the situation worse.

Following the advice of a trained pet recovery specialist may literally be the difference whether your loved pet makes it back home or not.

Onyx – Recovered – 09-02-2015

September 2, 2015 By tracey

onyx2

Onyx went missing on Saturday, August 29th when she pulled away from the owner while on a walk. She took off with her leash still attached. She made it over 5 miles to Sheatown where she was safely trapped today September 2nd.

We had a sighting by the owner yesterday deep in the woods and of course Onyx ran like most lost dogs do. Yesterday I asked the owner to take me to where he saw Onyx in the woods. It was way too far into the woods and not a good spot to trap and way too much quad activity back there. So, I asked the owner to show me the other area she was seen in to see if that was a better spot. As soon as we got there, it was a much better spot and an area where we could lure her out of the woods and not have to go into the woods and scare her. I knocked on the door of the house close to where she was seen and asked for permission to search the woods behind their house. Not even 5 minutes after looking, Onyx appeared and looked right at us and headed towards us. But, then she turned and went over and walked past my car and then sniffed the owner’s car and headed back into the woods. We quickly setup the trap and prepared for a very long night.

We checked the trap every 2 hours and nothing. Around 5 am I headed up to check the trap again and no sign of her, I refreshed the food and headed back out to work. She was seen in that area around 10:30 the day before and I had a good feeling she would be making another appearance there today around the same time and sure enough she did!!! The trap was checked around 10 am and no Onyx. But, then the homeowner called me where I had the trap set before 11 am and said I swear I just heard a dog bark in the woods. I told her it was most likely her and asked if she would be so kind to take a walk out to the front of her home to check. She graciously did and sure enough I heard Onyx barking as she was walking towards the trap and she said….”she is in the trap!!!” Words I live for… smile emoticon I called the owners Dave and Sabrina and they were thrilled!!!

Onyx has lost weight, has some scraps/cuts, is full of burrs (those buggers hurt I was covered in them last night) and most likely ticks. She will be seeing the vet for treatment. Onyx looked rough last night because of the heat and was exhausted and probably dehydrated. Thankfully, those are all things that can be treated and fixed though.

I would like to thank the homeowner’s that graciously without a second thought allowed me to search their yard and called me to tell me they heard her barking (I’m sorry I didn’t get your names). Thank you to the owners Dave and Sabrina for trusting me to get their baby back, it is a long and sometimes strange process to people that have never experienced a lost dog before….thanks for sticking with me and believing in the methods to my madness.

Thank you to my hubby that kept me company last night for trap checks and for always loading the trap in the car. smile emoticon And a special thanks to my friend Stacie for coming out to search last night, helping me setup the trap, and for meeting the owner to get Onyx safely out of the trap while I was at work. You ROCK and I am proud to have you as a friend and a fellow crazy animal lover. 🙂

Welcome home sweet Onyx, you are safe now….no more running.
